During the next few blogs we’ll be covering the main points to consider when choosing an outdoor canopy for your school, college or nursery.

In summary, each blog will address the following topics:

  • Longevity – is the canopy a temporary (demountable) or permanent structure and how long can it be expected to last?
  • Materials & safety – what are the best materials to look for when choosing an outside shelter and how should it perform in all weathers?
  • Appearance – what design features does the canopy and frame have?
  • Installation – how long does it take to deliver and install the structure?
  • Function – what are the different uses schools, colleges and nurseries can put to an outdoor shelter?
  • Planning & budgets – what planning rules apply to school shelters and what are the costs?

With over 100 installations in the UK & Europe, Aquila Shelters has concentrated on supplying outdoor shelters to schools, colleges and nurseries for the last twenty years.

Strength, Durability, Protection

During each blog – you’ll see our company mascot, Portentus the Aquilifer. The Eagle (Aquila in Latin) was chosen as the Roman standard as a show of strength and durability as the army made the march under the protection of outstretched wings. Strength, durability and protection are all characteristics of our shelters, which have often been said to resemble an eagle in flight.

Established in 1987, Aquila Shelters was set up by Roger Speare. After graduating from Cambridge University Roger worked as a Global Executive before selecting Buro Happold, a world leader in the field, to design a modular framed tensile fabric canopy. The Aquila Series 1 was born and is now in it’s seventh series as a shelter which typically lasts for over 20 years.

Here’s just some of our satisfied school customers:

“We are very pleased with our canopy, not only has it extended our outdoor play by providing shelter, it also means our sandpit and water trays can be left outside and they no longer get dirty and waterlogged by the rain. The children love it and it has sparked a good deal of imaginative play as they call it the tent.”

Kathryn Phillips at Craig Y Don Playschool

“Aquila Shelters has undertaken three projects at our prestigious ‘City of Norwich School’ – and the effects have been dramatic on both pupils and staff alike – particularly in terms of extended recreational spaces, which are both colourful and complementary to our school. Without the help and considerable expertise of Aquila this would not have been possible.”

Mike Bullock, Site Manager at City of Norwich School

“We have had excellent service from the school playground shelters supplied by Aquila four years ago and we are very pleased with the latest additions.”

Ken Taylor, Site Services Manager at Stamford School

“It was the design sketch that Aquila supplied with their quotation that initially persuaded us to buy from them. In reality the school playground shelters more than live up to their promise. They are seriously good value for money.”

Ingrid Alsop, Headteacher at Shillington Lower School

“The school playground shelter has improved our school environment and transformed our social space. The installation also provided a valuable weather-proof practical area for our construction skills students who carried out the groundwork.”

Paul Moss, Assistant Headteacher at Clayton Hall College
