Providing protection against the harmful effects of UV rays for pre school children.

As school resources are stretched through growth the need to take education outdoors is increasingly encountered. Designated work and social spaces need to be created and parents require shelter from the weather. This expanding school environment needs to accommodate many activities and provide a welcoming, safe and flexible space to meet everyone’s needs. In the current economic and funding climate this need does not diminish and the challenge we now face is to manage the shift from large-scale new build projects to continuous incremental growth. However, this problem can also provide an opportunity by focusing the mind on transforming facilities that already exist.

So how does your school plan to meet this need? Maybe you will face the challenge of finding a way to utilise unused and unimaginative school space or extend learning and leisure areas beyond the building into the school grounds. You may need to create something new alongside a very modern or old school property and of course safety, durability and flexibility will be of paramount importance as will complying with planning and environmental regulations. Whatever solution you find needs to be affordable and justified on the basis of how it is used.

At Aquila Shelters we specialise in designing and installing school projects. We have worked with schools at all levels to provide standard or bespoke frames and canopies to cover work zones, social spaces and waiting areas. Our structures are durable, elegant, strong, safe, easily maintained and flexible.

Our shelters are supplied as completely demountable units with column supports intended to be either freestanding with anchor points or fixed to the school building. The canopy is a ridged conical shape designed with rainwater drainage and snow dispersal in mind. The structure has a design wind speed of 28 metres pre second and a snow load of 30kg per square metres. An early project worthy of note was the games pavilion installed in May 1987 at a Caravan Park in Southsea. This structure was subjected to the full force of the Great Storm that devastated southern England in October 1987 and survived with no significant damage. During the heavy snowfall of December & January 2010-2011 all of our one hundred long term installations withstood the weight of sustained heavy snowfall.

Our frames are manufactured from structural aluminium that can be powder coated with the further option of protective padding around the column supports. This is our standard specification for primary schools where our shelters are designed around the need to accommodate high volumes of small people passing through them. Our membranes are manufactured from fully waterproof, flameproof and UV resistant reinforced PVC.

Our shelters come in a range of different sizes and colours and can be customised with your school name, badge or graphics. Our quoted prices are inclusive of all materials, labour, fixtures and fittings including pre-installation groundwork when required.

We operate in accordance with the Institute of Structural Engineers Guidance for the use of Temporary Demountable Structures (2007) which states that periodic inspections should be carried out on all structural components that are permanently installed (i.e. for more than 28 days) in a stationary and non-movable configuration, and the frequency of inspection should be based on the prevailing exposure conditions. To meet these criteria our experienced team is available to carry out routine inspection and maintenance work within the terms and duration of the contract agreed.

The success of the design and installation rests in its ability to deliver extreme strong performance without compromising aesthetics; it is both smart and strong and built to last at least ten years.

The next step is for us to visit your school to carry out a complete site survey. Whilst with you we will discuss the various configurations available to you and how bespoke you would like the solution to be. We will also provide you with design plan of the solution in your school environment.

Many schools have chosen to re-order from us as their expansion plans have developed. Here is a sample of just some of our delighted customers.

“We have had excellent service from the canopies supplied by Aquila four years ago and we are very pleased with the latest additions.”

Ken Taylor, Site Services Manager at Stamford School

“It was the design sketch that Aquila supplied with their quotation that initially persuaded us to buy from them. In reality the canopies more than live up to their promise. They are seriously good value for money.”

Ingrid Alsop, Headteacher at Shillington Lower School

“The canopies have improved our school environment and transformed our social spaces. The installation also provided a valuable weather-proof practical area for our construction skills students who carried out the groundwork.”

Paul Moss, Assistant Headteacher at Clayton Hall College
